Hi friends, and welcome to issue #12 of the Bonfire product update!

If you're just joining, this newsletter goes out roughly weekly (as long as we have something worthwhile to say) and highlights new product features, cool use cases we're seeing from around the community, and the occasional drop or giveaway. You can find our past issues here.

Product Updates

🔌 API Outages

Unfortunately, a good deal of our energy recently has gone to 'fighting fires', as outages of the APIs we use caused some downstream issues on our side. The good news is that the root cause appears to have been fixed on Rally's end, restoring normal function sometime middle of last week. We've also implemented a few new measures on our side to ensure we're more resilient to any outages in the future, and are also working on better communication (e.g. a dedicated channel in our Discord and banner message in the dashboard) when we're aware of issues which we expect could impact your use of Bonfire. We appreciate you bearing with us.

👿 Multi-Accounters

We've also gotten a few new reports of airdrops being 'gamed' by users with multiple accounts. Since launch we've seen that airdrops and bounties (and opportunities to earn more broadly) are one of the most powerful tools to onboard one's community to web3 and their token, so fighting this kind of abuse is our highest priority. Here's what we're doing:

What we've done

• Fraud & sybil tiger team - we're in the process of setting up a working group of creators + devs to collectively better try and understand and mitigate potential fraud vectors as they arise. If you're interested in being part of this group, reply to this email and let us know!

• Suspicious account flagging - we've started to monitor and flag suspicious looking accounts; flagged accounts will not be able to claim airdrops and bounties

• Email validation checking - there are a few common ways of spoofing email addresses, which we now check for to validate that each email is in fact unique. We've also blacklisted certain known high-risk and "disposable" email services

• Token-gating - token-gating is probably the most effective way of controlling who's eligible to claim your drop. We'll be shipping more features related to gating in the very near future

• Integrating fraud detection software - over the coming weeks we'll be implementing third party fraud detection software to help us more effectively (and scalably) detect and respond to suspicious behavior

• More ways to control eligibility - think whitelists, blacklists, and more controls around gating
